Kebab is a Turkish dish made with small slices of grilled lamb, beef, or chicken and cooked vegetables. There are at least dozen types of kebabs; including well known grilled dishes cooked on a skewer, such as shish and doner kebab. It became popular in Turkey as early as 11th century, and is said to have been differentiated into various kinds throughout the country during the Ottoman Empire. When eating kebab as a main dish, it is usually made with pilaf (Turkish fried rice) and pide (Turkish bread made with flat wheat dough baked in a brazier) served in a sandwich-like fashion.
